This is one of the prayers and salutations (durood) to the Prophet صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ , that the great Imam and Mujtahid, Abū ʿAbdillāh Muhammad ibn Idrīs al-Shāfiʿī – lovingly known as Imam al-Shafi رضي الله عنه , used to regularly recite (among many others, that have been reported, that he regularly recited).
Regarding his love for reciting durood, Hadrat Allama Sakhavi رضي الله عنه has written in his book that Abdullah bin Abdul Hakam رضي الله عنه saw Imam Shafi’i رضي الله عنه in a dream after his passing and inquired about life after death.
Imam Shafi’i رضي الله عنه told him that because of the continuous recitation of the Durood, Allah Ta’ala gave him the most exalted position of the highest grade in Heaven and forgave him.
Hadrat Imam Muzni رضي الله عنه has also narrated exactly the same story.
In Sa’adat-ud-Darain p89, Imam Shafi رضي الله عنه stated :
‘What I love is that one should recite Durood Sharif abundantly under all circumstances.
Here is one of the durood’s of Imam Shafi رضي الله عنه , recited by Shaykh Dr. Mohammad Mehanna
Oh Allah! Grant the Best of your Blessings upon Your most fortunate of creation, our master Muhammad.
And upon his household and his companions.
And salutations on them in multitude, as is your knowledge (i.e. eternal)
And in multitude, as the ink to write Your words (ie eternal)
(and salutations on them) each time You are remembered and he (the Prophet) is remembered by the rememberers (zakirs)
(And salutations on them) each time the heedless is neglectful of Your remembrance and his (the Prophet) remembrance.
