Monotheism in Surat al-An’aam (Chapter 6)

Monotheism in Surat al-An’aam (Chapter 6)

By Shaykh Hani Murad Ibrahim

If he returns and has washed away the dust of negligence and oppression, and he is the owner of nothing but faith and submission, (he will see) with the universe speaking of pure monotheism.

The first words of the surah begin with a thunderous shell, crushing the distorted logic of the polytheists. So even though God created the heavens and the earth and made darkness and light; For they, by their Lord, do justice!

And the surah was called Al-Anam because cattle were the core purpose of polytheism to contradict monotheism, and the issue of the right to analyse and the prohibition that they consider themselves godlike and neglecting Who is their true one Lord, Allah. Cattle were the backbone of the economy in the Quraysh, we realize that the economy – like all aspects of life – is subject to the belief in the oneness of Allah (توحيد الله)

In order to establish and affirming the belief in توحيد , the surah takes the reader on a journey of a world of cosmic scenes. So as level the correcting the ideas, thoughts, and beliefs of the polytheists, laden with evidence (ادلائل) and full of indications so that it may drive the people from the market and lead them to the reins of Allah Almighty, and open their eyes to the common proofs of monotheism in Allah’s kingdom. and the wonders He has mentioned throughout. So it goes on refuting suspicions, draws hearts to pondering and reading the signs of Allah in oneself and above, and arouse and wake his innateness and instincts And, have fear for the life hereafter!

The surah establishes the doctrine (عقيدة) of monotheism on a rational contemplative view of the universe and its astronomical wonders and other aspects like vegetation – providing arguments and evidence. The scene shows Abraham arguing with his people and moving among them in as in cosmic astronomical movement, inferring to the planets and their orbit.

The enlightening Quranic logic urges the rigid mind of the ignorant to perform actions for which it was created. Are the ignorant people in their stubbornness and relapse of their innate instinct (فطرة), except in self-stubbornness and so rigidity in thought?

The surah also establishes the doctrine of monotheism, inferred by looking at human history, and it establishes that one Allah destroyed one nation and revived others, and calls upon the polytheists to think about the consequences for those who reject and the neglectful. The history of the apostles and their people is presented. And how Allah sent them calling towards monotheism; from Noah to Muhammad, may Allah bless them and grant them peace.

The surah shakes the pride of the sick polytheists, stirs their strong sense, knocks them, and rebukes them, pushing them to reflect and meditate. Strip them in front of themselves;

فَإِنَّهُمْ لَا يُكَذِّبُونَكَ وَلَٰكِنَّ الظَّالِمِينَ بِآيَاتِ اللَّهِ يَجْحَدُونَ

(O Muhammad!) We know indeed that the things they say grieve you, though in truth it is not you whom they give the lie to, but it is the signs of Allah that these wrong-doers reject
Surah al-anam v 33

The surah is replete with proof after proof. So the command “Say” 44 times, invokes the hand of absolute divine power, and the pronoun “He” is repeated 39 times. And after the mind floats and wanders through the kingdom of Allah between bodies and spheres, past and present, messengers and people, planting and vegetation, love and hate, heaven and hell, darkness and light, earth and sky, good and bad, benefit and harm, night and day, unseen and seen, secrets and disclosures, and affirmation and denial, evidence and miracles; If he returns and has washed away the dust of negligence and oppression, and he is the owner of nothing but faith and submission, (he will see) with the universe speaking of pure monotheism.
